Black Sabbath as jazz? Jazz Sabbath do just that – with clever arrangements, a rich groove and a good dose of tongue-in-cheek humour. The British jazz trio performs instrumental reinterpretations of Black Sabbath songs and demonstrates just how surprisingly well heavy metal material can be adapted to a jazz and swing context.
The band was founded by pianist Adam Wakeman – a long-standing keyboardist and guitarist for Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne, amongst others. The musicians around Wakeman present their interpretations with a rich trio sound and a touch of humour regarding their fictional ‘origin story’ as the alleged original authors of the pieces, before they were made popular by Black Sabbath.
Jazz Sabbath has released several albums, including their self-titled debut in 2020 and Vol. 2 in 2022, both of which enjoyed success in the international jazz charts.
